A sizzling story of everyone’s favorite couple from amazing Stephanie Evanovich’s New York Times bestseller Big Girl Panties: hunky professional baseball player Chase Walker and his sassy wife Amanda.

When pro baseball player Chase Walker first meets Amanda at her restaurant, it’s love at first sight. While Amanda can’t help noticing the superstar with the Greek-god-build, he doesn’t have a chance of getting to first—or any other—base with her. A successful entrepreneur who’s built her business from scratch, Amanda doesn’t need a Prince Charming to sweep her off her feet. And a curvy girl who likes to cook and eat isn’t interested in being around the catty, stick-thin herd of females chasing Chase and his teammates.

But Chase isn’t about to strike out. A man who isn’t interested in playing the field, he’s a monogamist who wants an independent woman like Amanda. His hopes rally when she discovers that squeaky-clean Chase has a few sexy and very secret pre-game rituals that turn the smart, headstrong businesswoman on—and into his number one fan.

Then a tabloid discovers the truth and turns their spanking good fun into a late- night punchline. Is Amanda ready to let loose and swing for the fences? Or will the pressure of Chase’s stardom force them to call it quits?

Amazon.com Review Dorothea Benton Frank Stephanie Evanovich Dorothea Benton Frank, bestselling author of The Hurricane Sisters, interviews Stephanie Evanovich

Dottie: I just want to congratulate you on the success of Big Girl Panties, your debut. And you’re following that up a year later with a new novel that I’m sure will keep people talking.

Stephanie: Thanks Dottie! It's been a really fun year. I'm looking forward to the July 8th release of The Sweet Spot. I can't wait to get back out there and talk to readers about it. And congrats on your new release - The Hurricane Sisters. It's the book I think I'll be taking with me when I travel, if I can wait that long to read it.

Dottie: The romantic duo in The Sweet Spot, Chase and Amanda Walker, were sidekicks in Big Girl Panties — did fans specifically ask for you to bring them back for a star turn?

Stephanie: After BGP hit the streets and I started getting feedback, it was pretty clear that some readers really took to them. They nearly stole the show! And I'm positively thrilled by that. They may be my favorite couple.

Dottie: Chase Walker is a superstar baseball player and a lot of the tension in the novel is Amanda trying to decide if she wants to be a superstar’s girlfriend. I know you’re a sports fan - were you excited to have a pro athlete as your hero?

Stephanie: Excited is a bit of an understatement. It was more like crazy-over-the-moon psyched. There's just something about athletes. ..yum.

Dottie: There’s some genuinely fun spicy scenes in this book! How do readers when you turn up the heat?

Stephanie: When I went out on the road with BGP and met readers, fun seemed to be the order of the day. Throw some spice in there and it's a recipe for delicious hotness - at least I'm hoping that's the case.

Her fans will be thrilled she’s given Chase and Amanda, who appeared as a married couple in Big Girl Panties, their own book.” (Booklist)

But Chase has charm and heart, as well as hunky good looks, and he isn't about to strike out in this courtship. His hopes rally when Amanda discovers that squeaky-clean Chase has a few sexy and very secret pregame rituals that turn the smart, headstrong businesswoman on—and into his number one fan. At first I really liked Amanda. She was smart, independent, confident and ran her own restaurant. Then she met Chase, a pro baseball player. When he began his relentless pursuit of her I got a "creepy" vibe off him. The more he pushed the more "stalker with an obsessive personality" he appeared. Then one night she was "naughty" and said a cuss word. He grabbed her, flung her over his knee, and spanked her until she sobbed. She was shocked. To him, she "deserved" it, and he made it clear he spanked his women when they didn't act like ladies, he would do this anytime he wanted no matter what she said, and if she wanted to be with him, that was the deal. I guess this explains why he was never with one woman very long.Any woman frightened or shocked by this would have run away fast and never looked back, blocked his phone number, and went on with their lives. Amanda chose to mold herself to what Chase wanted and drop her career to travel with him. She changed her personality and lost her confident demeanor.I don't have a problem with kinky sex, if both people are into it and consent to it. Chase's behavior was abusive and disturbing. He was manipulative and domineering. I was very disappointed the author chose to show a woman losing herself to keep a man. I never finished the book.

I don't enjoy reading about spineless heroines, abusive relationships and jerk male love interest By xendula What started off as a mediocre yet enjoyable fluffy romance, turned into domestic violence, initially non consensual. The female MC turns from a strong-willed, educated business woman into a shy girl I just want to shake to make her wake up. She was basically beaten by her BF, and is too shy to even address it in the morning, looking down and stumbling over her own words. At no point does the douche apologize, or feel bad. No, he laughs and smirks, which makes her feel even more insecure, yet she stays with him, gives up her carreer, her free will, and hangs her brain on a nail.People can do whatever they want in their bedrooms, I just can't stand reading about weak doormat heroines nor domestic violence. It makes my stomach turn to think that teenage girls may read this and think abusive relationships equal love. It's seldom a book makes me so angry.

Branfield The Sweet Spot by Stephanie Evanovich is the romance of Chase and Amanda Walker, a secondary couple introduced in her first novel, Big Girl Panties. The two novels stand on their own and can be read independent of one another (but I highly recommend Big Girl Panties).Chase Walker is an extremely successful and wildly popular squeaky clean baseball player who falls in love with restaurant owner Amanda Cole pretty much at first sight. Amanda resists his considerable charm but he eventually wears her down and they begin dating. When Chase makes a surprising request that involves Amanda’s career, she turns him down and what happens next irrevocably changes their relationship and eventually puts them in middle of a very public scandal.Despite his successful career, Chase is rather humble and does not take his good fortune for granted. His life has not been all sunshine and roses but he does not dwell on his losses and he tries to focus on the positive. Chase is charismatic, appealing and so unbelievably persistent it is little wonder Amanda finds him impossible to resist.Amanda is a self-assured and independent woman. She has a few residual self-esteem issues that stem from her childhood, but she does not lack self-confidence. She has been so focused on making a success of her restaurant that she does not date much but she is not inexperienced when it comes to matters of the heart or sex. She is bedazzled by Chase but her self-esteem issues come into play and she is left wondering why he is attracted to her. When Amanda finally does agree to date him, they take things slow and their romance is sweet and despite Chase’s hectic schedule, fairly uncomplicated. But (isn’t there always a but?) Chase has been keeping a kink of his secret and instead of talking about it with Amanda, he makes an unreasonable demand and when she refuses, he turns into a sulky, petulant jerk. The resulting showdown between them takes an unexpected turn and when Amanda is confused and uncertain about what happened between them, Chase becomes an arrogant, condescending jerk who claims to knows her better than she knows herself (which I always find insulting and rather ridiculous). Instead of walking away from him at this point, Amanda turns rather spineless, gives in to his every whim and molds herself into what Chase wants her to be. From this point in the novel, I really disliked both characters and I found it impossible to believe either of them had any deep emotion for the other. The major conflict occurs between them when their secret goes public and Amanda runs from the entire situation. She has good reasons for avoiding Chase (mainly because there is NO way she can live up to his unrealistic expectations), but the real impetus behind her leaving is based on sketchy advice from someone she knows better than to listen to. When Amanda is finally ready to face the scandal, Chase does not exactly welcome her back with open arms and she goes to pretty extreme lengths to salvage their relationship.I have a very mixed feelings about The Sweet Spot. I absolutely loved the first half. The characters were wonderfully realistic and likeable and the romance between Chase and Amanda was sweet and romantic. But the second half feels like it was written about two completely different characters (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde come to mind). I could not stand who they turned into or the direction their relationship took.Despite not being overly crazy about The Sweet Spot, Stephanie Evanovich is an excellent author and based on how much I loved Big Girl Panties, I would definitely consider reading any of her future novels.I received a complimentary copy for review.

Book Description

Reactive Programming (RP) is central to many concurrent systems. It endeavors to make the process of developing highly-concurrent, event-driven, and asynchronous applications simpler and less error-prone. RP comes in many flavors and we will look at some of them in this book.

Clojure Reactive Programming is a practical guide aimed at exploring RP. It starts by describing Functional Reactive Programming (FRP) and its formulations, as well as how it inspired Compositional Event Systems (CES).

It also presents several examples of Reactive applications implemented in different frameworks, allowing you to develop an understanding of the subject as well as learn how to develop your ability to work with time-varying values. By the end of the book, you will be equipped to solve real-world problems and have a clear understanding of when and how you should use different the approaches that are shown in the book.

What you will learn
  • Understand the key abstractions of Functional Reactive Programming (FRP) and Compositional Event Systems (CES)
  • Discover how to think in terms of time-varying values and event streams
  • Create, compose, and transform Observable sequences with Reactive Extensions
  • Create a CES framework from scratch using core.async as its foundation
  • Build a simple ClojureScript game using Reagi

I've been working with Clojure and ClojureScript for a little while, and was working on a web app using concepts from reactive programming when this book was released. This has been the best resource I've found for understanding reactive programming and should be accessible to beginners to Clojure who know nothing about reactive programming. It has lots of references if you want to dive deeper into different paradigms or libraries, and the discussion of the concepts was very interesting and worthwhile. One of the things I appreciated about this book that is somewhat rare in technical titles is the variety of different libraries, styles of reactive programming, and range of examples covered. They are all examined in pretty thorough depth and built on from each other, and I know that I will be using it as a reference for future projects to see how to apply reactive programming ideas to different domains. One of the very few technical books I've stayed up late reading. Highly recommended.

Good on Concepts, Good on Application By Amazon Customer This short, focused book nicely covers both the concepts and clojure/clojurescript applications of Reactive programming (FRP). Reading it will give you a nice, efficient push up the learning curve. There's no better praise for a technical book, in my view.

Reading this book was like experiencing a Vulcan mind-meld focused on RX By Steve Buikhuizen Reading this book was like experiencing a Vulcan mind-meld focused on RX.Previously I knew only that reactive programming was some kind of listener pattern. After reading this book I am comfortable discussing the various flavours of RX, how they can be implemented in different languages and what libraries are suitable. Thanks to the author for expanding my brain.

A Bundle of Laughs By Jim Hendricks Follow Wendy as she goes from being a Miami real estate agent to "Indiana Jones with boobs" when she meets Roger Jolley, world famous archeologist, solving mysteries together in their unique way. The characters are engaging and colorful. The writing is creative and witty and will keep you chuckling to laughing out loud as they solve mysteries that will keep you guessing until the end. Each book is a treasure on its own, as a bundle, a great discovery for those who haven't read the Wendy Darlin series.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great Deal, Great Set! By Mary E aka Lockette This set is a wonderful idea, a great deal on the whole Wendy Darlin series. I love having a whole set, like most readers, as when you get done with one book you naturally want to know what happens next. Having these all at hand and available to read, back to back, is the best way to do it. Below are all my reviews for each of the books. I gave this set a 5 stars for the deal and most of these books are 5 stars, some 4, but the set definitely deserves the full 5. If you like silly, slapstick humor, light mystery, romance and a lot of fun, these books are just what you're looking for.#1 Wendy and the Lost Boys: Barbara Silkstone's grown-up twist on the child-hood classic Peter Pan is a joy to read. This story has a little bit of everything: romance, mystery, and humor. The way the original version of the fairy tale winds its way throughout the storyline is ingenious! Being a fan of the original version, it was fun to see my favorite characters portrayed in different ways and sometimes even different creatures. Even famous, quotable lines are thrown into the book, bringing a smile to my face or often a big laugh. The subtleties of the original story creeping into the plot are a lot fun too. You have to pay close attention; Ms. Silkstone is so clever in entwining these into the storyline that sometimes it is easy to totally miss some of these. All in all, this is a great story that culminates to a wonderfully exciting ending. A fun, laugh-out-loud read. I plan on reading Barbara Silkstone's other book in this series, The Secret Diary of Alice in Wonderland, to see how she deals with that fairy tale; I am expecting a lot of laughs from that book as well.#2 London Broil: Wendy and Roger of the "Johnny Depp eyes" are back in the sequel to Wendy and the Lost Boys, hitting the ground running, trying to find that elusive last lost boy. This adventure finds Wendy rushing off to London to help retrieve the artifact and hopefully spend some time with Roger. Of course, nothing is ever that easy for our favorite real estate agent turned artifact hunter. She runs into a charming client of Roger's, his psychotic wanna-be girlfriend, two bumbling idiots trying to kidnap her (what else is new?) and some old friends from the last book even show up to add to the fun. Soon there is a whole group of people chasing all over London and chasing Wendy to find that last lost boy. Barbara Silkstone has again written a book that is fast-paced, witty and filled with scenes to make you laugh so loud you had better be careful where you read this at! Wendy is a great character and the one-liners just keep coming. Again, I hope there are more adventures to come with Wendy and Roger--they make a wondeful pair!#3 Cairo Caper: Give me a Barbara Silkstone book and I am thrilled; make it a Wendy Darlin book and I am head over heels; turn the main love interest into a guy with Johnny Depp eyes, and I will be lost in that story until the final page. Silkstone does such a fabulous job of blending mystery, thrills and chills with slap-stick comedy. I have never read any other books that had me gasping, trying to figure out how these characters are going to get out of this new mess and then gasping for air, laughing so hard at the crazy way they actually get out of these situations. Oh, the mind of Barbara Silkstone! And be on your toes- it isn't dumbed-down humor; this is what I would call smart humor. This newest Wendy Darlin mystery is my favorite. The new characters introduced are fantastic and make the story come alive. I love the addition of Wendy's newest friend, a tiny librarian-turned-sex expert, searching for her own Egyptian treasure. This book starts off with a bang from the very first paragraph and from there Wendy and her archeologist boyfriend Roger are off and on the hunt for their treasure, being chased through Cairo. You don't need to read the other books in the series to read this one, but why wouldn't you want to? Wendy and Roger are so much fun; you won't want to miss a minute of their adventures together.#4 Miami Mummies: Wendy Darlin is one of my favorite book heroines and I am so glad she is back. She is comes back with a scream- which is right where this newest adventure begins- with a scream and a murder, and drops Wendy right in the middle of the scene. She just can't keep herself out of these messes, can she? Soon Wendy finds herself in deep in two problems- one involving some mummies that have turned up in Miami and another involving an old friend who is asking her for a deathbed favor.. Can she juggle these two crazy situations and come out unscathed? And will she be able to keep her manicure and heels intact this time? This book has some old friends who show up, including, of course, archeologist, Roger Jolley, best friend and part-time drag queen Kit Kennedy, and some fun new characters. There is even a special tip of the hat to Hitchcock in the book. All of this meshes into a fabulous story that gives us the typical crazy, slapstick humor, who-done-it mystery that is what I love about Silkstone's books. This is an overall fun mystery that can't be missed.#5Slikstone's books are definitely my guilty pleasure. My typical reads are serious, blood-splattered mysteries and I stay away from the "Cozy Mysteries" as they are just too sugary sweet. Silkstone's mysteries are in a category all their own. I just have to call them Fun Mysteries because that is what they are from page 1- fun with slapstick humor, filled with giggles throughout with a wonderful mystery as the main plot. These books are what makes me think of a relaxing read on the beach on a beautiful summer day. I can pick up one of the Wendy Darlin series and I have a smile on my face until the very last page. This fifth in the series of Wendy's adventures is along the same line- a fun-filled mystery that keeps me giggling and wondering who done it throughout. In Vulgarian Vamps, Wendy and Roger are headed to their destination wedding with their best man/maid of honor, Kit, the nail tech/drag queen. Roger has planned the entire adventure and the trio lands in Vulgaria expecting fun and excitement- and per Wendy, NO adventures as she is 7 months pregnant with Little Roger. What they get when they arrive to their accommodations is anything but what Wendy and Kit expected. Instead of the romantic, scenic, relaxing destination wedding, they get a whole lot of unexpected trouble. It starts with meeting their bizarre innkeeper/cook Squirl, and gets crazier with a ridiculous baby stealing vampire named Vlad, Mina an energetic little vamp, and a familiar looking priest who is in town to help take care of a tragedy at the Abbey that happened the night of the Lugosi Comet. Will Wendy get her wedding planned, the mystery solved, keep the vampires away, make sure the townspeople don't burn down the Abbey and keep Little Roger from making an early entrance into the world?

Wendy is a hoot and has some of the funniest phobias I've ever read about. Her dialog is hilarious, too. Lots of fun adventure and crazy characters. If you want to laugh and be highly entertained, you'll love these books as much as I do.

What goes around comes back around. Several years ago I was invited to an Easter bunny party and I bought myself this really cute bunny outfit. An all-in-one affair which fitted me everywhere, except my butt. So that was the end of that party idea. I canceled out and sat at home eating chocolate Easter eggs, just me and my lonely butt. It's amazing how quickly you forget misery when you get a sugar rush, or two, or three or - I'm embarrassed to say how many. So, I've been invited to another bunny party and I rushed to the closet to try on my poor neglected bunny costume - and it fits! So this year, me and my now seriously shrunken butt are going to a party, and I'm going to celebrate the newfound me. Stand aside world - there's a new bunny girl in town.

Lambotte The satire, wit and wild sense of the absurd had me fondly recalling Chris Brookmyre in his earlier novels. I hope another is in the works and that we haven't seen the last of Marigold. Cheers!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An entertaining page-turner! By Stuie This is an enjoyable and relentless tale which giddily revolves around a hapless and likeable central character. Several recognisable personalities are neatly woven into the plot - some entertaining, some loathsome - which keeps the action moving at pace. There are moments of humour, action ad despair plus some nice historical titbits thrown in to boot.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very funny, tense and moving. By David Sellars A very funny, tense and surprisingly moving read which is impossible to put down. The world of Marigold Dark is thrust upon you and grips until the final page. Paul Bisson crafts a fabulous antihero as the protagonist in this unique novel.

Acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Lynne Truss (Eats, Shoots & Leaves) is back with a mesmerizing and hilarious tale of cats and murder  For people who both love and hate cats comes the tale of Alec Charlesworth, a librarian who finds himself suddenly alone: he’s lost his job, his beloved wife has just died. Overcome by grief, he searches for clues about her disappearance in a file of interviews between a man called "Wiggy" and a cat, Roger. Who speaks to him.            It takes a while for Alec to realize he’s not gone mad from grief, that the cat is actually speaking to Wiggy . . . and that much of what we fear about cats is true. They do think they’re smarter than humans, for one thing. And, well, it seems they are! What’s more, they do have nine lives. Or at least this one does – Roger’s older than Methuselah, and his unblinking stare comes from the fact that he’s seen it all. And he’s got a tale to tell, a tale of shocking local history and dark forces that may link not only the death of Alec’s wife, but also several other local deaths. But will the cat help Alec, or is he one of the dark forces? In the deft and comedic hands of mega-bestseller Lynne Truss, the story is as entertaining as it is addictive” (The Sunday Telegraph) – an increasingly suspenseful and often hysterically funny adventure that will please cat lovers and haters alike. And afterwards, as one critic noted, “You may never look at a cat in quite the same way again” (The Daily Mail).

Everyone who likes cats, dogs, and people, not necessarily in that order, will enjoy this one!As one of the characters says, "We've always asked ourselves, "Why are cats so pissed off all the time? ... Well, now it's explained." The intriguing plot unfolds in an unusual manner, with a great deal of humor and erudition along the way. The strangest thing of all is the events described do seem almost plausible ... I especially liked the author's notes at the end!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A very short very expensive very dreadful book By Sara This book was not what I had expected, it’s neither here nor there. If it wanted to be horror is too bland, if it wanted to be noir it’s too gross, and if it wanted to be comedy the hilarity just isn’t there. The writing style is rambling at best, a deliberate choice from the author, but the why is lost on me as it doesn’t enhance the reading experience, the contrary I would say. (And sometimes to absurd see e-miaow)Some digressions are useless and boring. Sometimes the author gets lost describing things pointless to the story and for many pages. Like Alec unpacking…????The plot has some holes that the author tries to patch with farfetched explanations that don’t work. See Roger that doesn’t try to help Jo, if he didn’t want to talk he could meow and guide Wiggy.I admit that probably I wasn’t in the right mood to read this book. I had it on hold at the library and it was delivered to my Kindle precisely the moment I had finished book #1 of a series and was eager to start book #2, so I admit that this book felt more of an obstacle between books that something I’d enjoy. But even so it really fell short of the buzzing created around it.The price is ridiculously high (both eBook and print) for 256 meagre pages. If you’re still curious about it, I suggest you borrow it. But for me it’s not even worth the short two hours it takes to read it.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. ‘I was in search of silence and tranquillity.’ By Jennifer Cameron-Smith Alec, a retired librarian has recently been widowed. He heads off to a coastal village in North Norfolk with his small dog Watson in search of peace. But one night, while searching for mental stimulation, he opens his laptop and starts looking through a folder entitled ‘Roger’ which a former colleague had sent him. Inside that folder are files in which a man called Wiggy tells the story of his acquaintance with Roger – a talking cat, who sounds like Vincent Price. In a story that spans decades, Roger tells of how he learned to speak. Alec becomes part of the story, caught up in a world that contains a mysterious cat called Captain, kidnapping, murder and satanic cults. And yes, some cats really do have nine lives. ‘Purring was the way they sent people into a trance, you see – and then, when their prey was sort of paralysed and helpless, the cats would set to work with their claws.’The story moves at a quick pace, and I found the first half much funnier than the second. In the second half, well, things get frenetic and a little dangerous. It’s a combination of humour and horror that doesn’t always work, although I won’t be adding a cat to my household anytime soon.I’d recommend reading this in one sitting if possible.‘As if stories ever did end anyway.’Jennifer Cameron-Smith

Worth Having on Your Bookshelf By Student_of_Life I normally don't buy JavaScript books anymore because too many of them skip the theory behind how it all works or don't connect the dots enough. I have thrown away many books that I initially thought would be really helpful. So, I started to just download free copies. In all fairness, I have been studying JavaScript seriously for about a year (and it's been hard because of how badly most people teach the subject). But, this book is really filling in some holes that I not only have about JavaScript, but most importantly the DOM, the BOM and a few things about events.Yes, some of the examples you should never use in real life, but the point of them is to get you to start understanding the concept. Later on the author does say don't do it that way, but this way. For example, the book covers cookies. Though I think some programmers still use cookies a more modern way is to use local storage (the author covers why).Like I said, I normally don't buy programming books anymore, but this one is so useful for me that I am buying it not only for a hard copy reference, but in case I want to study without having to turn on my computer. And I am using some of the info in my personal notes.

There are tons of example problems in this book and to my surprise, they are all very clearly solved, explained and presented.I finished reading this book on the computer (PDF), but I had to purchase this book for future references because I found it to be that helpful.

Just want to point out that there are some 'typos', such as referencing back to a function name during an explanation by a DIFFERENT name haha. Happens a few times in the book. For example on pg. 374*from the book * In the final part of updateTimeZone(), you call the updateTime() function, passing the valuescontained within the selectedCity, offset, and dstAdjust variables:updateTime(selectedCity, offset, dstAdjust);}In the function updateTime(), you write the current local time and the equivalent time in the selectedcity to the output elements. You start at the top of the function by creating a new Date object, which is stored in the variablenow. The Date object will be initialized to the current local time:function updateOutput(selectedCity, offset, dstAdjust) {var now = new Date(); * from the book *You'll see that the author refers to the 'updateOutput' function by the name of 'updateTime'. There is no updateTime function in the original example at all, so that name came out of nowhere. You can clearly deduce he is referring to the 'updateOutput' though with some common sense. The reason I think it's important to point this out is if you are extremely new to programming this will confuse the heck out of you. Not even sure if you can call this a typo but this kind of 'mistake' is especially detrimental in a programming book. I've noticed at least three of these kind of mistakes in the book. Just a heads up to the author to watch out for these! Great book overall though

Bishop Zink has always been know as a man that God's hand has been on, and this book shows many examples of this. He has so many great one liners that whole sermons could be written about. You are sure to be blessed to have this book in your library.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. You Matter is inspiring, uplifting, and motivating. If you want to learn how to build a legacy with your life, read this book. By Danny Murphy Wisdom is a recurrent theme in Bishop Zink’s inspiring book. “In my opinion, the pursuit of wisdom is the foremost act of worship a person can live,” he writes. Another related theme is the importance of taking every thought captive in a world where that isn’t easy to do. He also writes of the spiritual DNA passed on to him by his father, and the way he has passed that spiritual DNA onto his sons. The book includes numerous examples of how Bishop Zink has built his legacy. He has clearly accumulated a great deal of wisdom and it’s fortunate that he has recorded some of it so others can partake of it.

By Lisa O.k., his is my fourth or fifth story from this author, and I'm telling you right now that if you aren't reading Tommy Hero, you should be. He's really good. I'll fess up and say that I hate the obviously fake name, but the stories more than make up for that. This short tale is about a dog that eats mailmen. Yes, men, not man. I've has a few postal people I'd like to sic Jackie on. This one's slightly warped! Recommended.

I was eager for more, and now it's here! His second book is even better than the first. And I love it that this time he was allowed to use his own name and the real name of the town. It was fun reading about the town I grew up in, recognizing familiar places and names (some more familiar than others: See Chapter Six). But you don't need to be from Woodstock, IL to enjoy this book. The stories are good: some funny, some poignant, but all entertaining. I can't wait for the next book! I recommend this book highly. You won't be disappointed!

I enjoyed learning as I followed the characters' development, and I believe this book is a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about the gift of prophecy.

It was so easy to grow, with those in the Cave, as I surrendered daily walking out what was shared in the Cave. Trying to grasp the quantum physics explanations were hard and challenging yet exciting and explosive. It is hard to explain but my spirit was soaring and my head was screaming, "Stop...I can't take anymore." Yet a few minutes later, I was re-reading to grasp who God is and what He has for me as a believer. The fruitcake depiction is a powerful lesson. Growing in my understanding of the fruit of the Spirit is so much fun! My spirit man has grown, in leaps and bounds, in reading this book.Thank you, Joe, for writing such an insightful book! I've recommended it to many to read. Thank You, Lord, for using Joe to draw us to You!

The Cave is profound in its insight in the spiritual gifts, growing in a gifting and how all of this cooperates with the fruits of the Spirit. All this is presented in the form of a narrative, which makes it so much easier to grasp for young adults and young christians. Not many books offer these deep insights.Besides the above mentioned themes, the author also takes the readers along into a deeper insight in some of the mysteries of life and of life-with-God.Could also be used with small groups in churches or youth groups as the themes are more or less condensed in chapters. The practicum experiences of the main characters can be practiced by the group (readers).

It is a more elaborate work than 'Looking Backward,' and in fact is a comprehensive economic treatise upon the subject that gives it its name. "Looking Backward": still the great American utopian novel By Lawrance Bernabo Edward Bellamy's "Looking Backward 2000-1887" remains the most successful and influential utopian novel written by an American writer mainly because the competition consists mostly of dystopian works, from Jack London's "The Iron Heel" to Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale," or science fiction works like Ursula K. LeGuin's "The Dispossessed." Still, I do not mean to give the impression that Bellamy's 1888 novel gets this honor by default. Magazine covers in 1984 were devoted to judging the track record of George Orwell's dystopian classic and I would argue that Bellamy deserves the same sort of consideration now that we have reached the 21st century. I certainly intend to use him to that end in my upcoming Utopian Images class. At the end of the 19th century Bellamy creates a picture of a wonderful future society. Bellamy's protagonist is Julian West, a young aristocratic Bostonian who falls into a deep sleep while under a hypnotic trance in 1887 and ends up waking up in the year 2000 (hence the novel's sub-title). Finding himself a century in the future in the home of Doctor Leete, West is introduced to an amazing society, which is consistently contrasted with the time from which he has come. As much as this is a prediction of a future utopia, it is also a scathing attack on the ills of American life heading into the previous turn of the century. Bellamy's sympathies are clearly with the progressives of that period."Looking Backward" does not have a narrative structure per se. Instead West is shown the wonders of Boston in the year 2000, with his hosts explaining the rationale behind the grand civic improvements. For example, he discovers that every body is happy and no one is either rich or poor, all because equality has been achieved. Industry has been nationalized, which has increased efficiency because it has eliminated wasteful competition. This is a world with no need of money, but every citizen has a sort of credit card that allows them to make individual purchases, although everyone has the same montly allowance. In Bellamy's world is so ideal that it does not have any police, a military, any lawyers, or, best of all, any salesmen. Education is so valued that it continues until students reach the age of 21, at which point all citizens enter the work force, where they will stay until the age of 45. Men and women are compensated equally, but there are some distinctions between job on the basis of gender, and pregnancy and motherhood are taken into account.Bellamy was living during the start of the Industrial Revolution, and like Francis Bacon and Tomasso Campanella who wrote during the height of the Age of Reason, he sees science and human ingenuity as being what will solve all of humanity's problems. He does not get into too many details regarding the comforts of modern living in the future, but there are several telling predictions (e.g., something very much like radio). However, it is clear that Bellamy is writing primarily to talk about economics and sociology, especially because he always compares his idealized future with the problems of his own time.Obviously Bellamy's critique of the late 19th century will be of less interest to today's students that his various predictions on the both the future and an ideal world, unless they are specifically studying the American industrial revolution. But the latter two are enough to make "Looking Backward" deserve to be included in a current curriculum and I am looking foward to how well my students think Bellamy predicted the world in which we now find ourselves living.

This particular edition, while not a Norton Critical Edition, does have a nice selection of additional readings in the back consisting of some of Bellamy's other writings as well as contemporary works by writers of other utopias and social commentaries such as William Morris, Charlotte Perkins, Henry Lloyd George, and William Dean Howells. All of these appendices provide a context for Bellamy's novel in terms of late 19th-century utopianism.

Thompson Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward, is a vision of a utopian Boston of the year 2000 seen in the eyes of the fictional, nineteenth century Bostonian, Julian West. Having fallen asleep for 113 years Mr. West is awakened by the Leetes family. Over the course of the next several days he discovers a multitude of changes that have occurred during his long slumber. Most importantly or most overarchingly is the idea of social change that has occurred. While many other authors' ideas of the future have involved images of great technological change, they have not demonstrated an adaptation of human behavioral change. In Bellamy's eyes however, there are some technological innovations but the primary changes occur in the areas of economics that leads to dramatic changes in the human condition. It seems to be a world in which, once everyone decided not to fight over money any longer, then people were capable of getting along. Public service and public caring for one another is the norm. In the USA of Bellamy's 2000, the government is a centralized state with the military as the primary employer. Bellamy refers to it as a corporate state and the industrialized army. In his world military and service go hand in hand. In his exploration Bellamy addresses many issues that would be of concern to not only his readers but to readers to this day. Obviously there is the economic foundation of both the nineteenth and the imaginary twentieth century of the book. This leads directly to the issues of labor. Issues of international economics, law and prison all come up in West's exploration of his newly discovered world. Again each of these issues is ultimately related and hence resolved through economics. Women's equality remains an unresolved although tremendously improved issue (an understatement). Women's issues are in some ways resolved because they are no longer the unpaid domestics that they were in Bellamy's day. There is less need for lawyers and understanding the law because things have been resolved with economics so that people are fighting over civil issues and since everyone has they same economic status then there is no need to steal. There is a great sense in Bellamy's writing that social Darwinism plays a significant role. Clearly there is an idea of eugenics (reminiscent of the Oneida community) where the bad parts of society are simply bread out of society. "Like the social Darwinists of his day, Bellamy viewed character traits as inborn and believed that the morally as well as the physically unfit must be weeded out if human beings were to evolve to a higher state." (Strauss, 76) What must be addressed about this particular work is the influence that it exhibited on other writers in Bellamy's day and after. "It influenced movements of Christian socialism wherever they appeared it positions echo and re-echo on George Bernard Shaw, Veblen, Debs, Norman Thomas and the early Zionists." (Halewood, 451) Although the book is missing from today's list of important contributions to American thought, the book's enormous popularity at the end of the previous century must be acknowledged. "Looking Backward was possibly the most popular utopian novel ever written, igniting a nationwide social reform movement and leaving an enduring mark upon the rising generation of American intellectuals and writers." (McClay, 264) The problems that it raises for us, as readers near the end of the twentieth century, are in areas of middle-class elitism, overt ideology, and the lack of demonstrative communal activity. This book is, however, a powerful example of a novel that moved from text to social reform movement. It has been said that the book is not a well-written piece of literature but that the significance of the text is in its effect on the society in which it was consumed. A utopian vision of a future world does two very important functions. One, it shows a more perfect vision of a happy world. But inherently in that vision is the need to discuss or point out all of the elements of the current world that make for an unhappy world. This book had profound influence not so much in the literary world, although numerous other utopian texts were produced in the years following its publication. With Bellamy we find a book that influenced nationalism throughout the United States and lead to socialistic reforms in policy in the early part of the twentieth century.
