These rituals rapidly metamorphose into psychedelic theatrical extravaganza. Chipman emerges in one piece, but is he more clear sighted than before or just a slave to Sanguini as guru and ringmaster? Chipman is a benighted but endearing hero, confronted by many moral and ethical dilemmas. His naivety and goodwill are offset by a shrewdness of intellect and an ability not only to observe but to participate in the beauty, brutality and seething sexual shenanigans of his seedy post-colonial environment. The satire is savage and so is the civil war which inevitably comes, but there is an unexpected and underlying tenderness shown in Chipman's dealings with Sanguini's troupe of international outlaws and generational refugees. It would be easy for a psycho adventure like this to fall into caricature. Instead, the protagonists have a depth of characterisation which makes it all touchingly down to earth and real. Not everyone escapes alive, sane or uncompromised from Tlula Leisure Beach. You will never guess the end.

Mock Chipman’s African Adventure by Jim AndersonChipman Smith, a 30 something lawyer with the New South Wales Department of the Attorney General is sent to Tlula Leisure Beach in the West African country of Bomzawe to get therapy for his alcoholism and homosexuality by the colorful Dr. Salvatore (Starry) Piero Sanguini.Set in 1972, at the Hornbill Palace Hotel, a leisure hotel owned by Sir Henry Kmango, a rich tycoon, the story is convoluted and somewhat funny. If you remember the 70's mantra of sex, drugs and rock and roll - imagine if you will, instead of rock and roll you will encounter mambas, Easter carnivals, a snake fetish priest, a deposed African dictator/liberator, stolen bronze artifacts, and all the drugs that can be legally/illegally obtained.Dr. Sanguini is obviously a fake - himself a patient of Dr. Adolf Siegfried, who claims his stay there as a patient was all the training needed to cure mental patients. Starry's real name is Barry Wilson - who has set camp in Tlula Beach and practices questionable psychotropic therapy.In the end, and after much mumbo jumbo Chipman falls in love with another "patient:' Zach Shaler - a troubled Peace corp worker who lost his twin sister at the same Tlula beach many years before.Narrated from the third person point of view (mostly Chipman's) the story is quite entertaining but of no literal value. A fun and easy read.

It's long, meandering, and at times off-the-rails absurd. But within that dense, psychodelic jungle of a narrative is one heck of a fun story about a mild-mannered Australian civil servant finding himself in the most unlikely of locations. An inspired cast of misfit characters, many moments of wild and brilliant stream-of-consciousness writing, and a richly imagined setting that swallows you into the story. Reading this crazy book was time well-spent.

Gray After reading the hilarious first book in this series I was thrilled to get to this one. I settled in and rejoined the boys once more. This time two were in jail and the other two were out scheming for money and a way to get them out. The issues that these four experience plays out worse than The Hangover. One of my favorite parts was when Lumpy and Pat knocked it out with an African woman in a roach coach. The imagery was so well scripted that the pictures in my head of Grace beating down pat before getting the hose made me laugh out loud. That scene has been my favorite in the series thus far. It is a vivid testament to the skills of the author to create hilarious scenarios that beg to be brought from book to screen. After considering the Dice one and two I had to admit that, although difficult to decide, I think Dice 2 is even better than the first; a rare occasion in a series without a doubt. Also, even though the escapades revolve primarily around finding the money to get the other two out of jail, you’ll see in the end that the denouement was a bit different than planned; another funny thing in itself.In the end, if you liked the first book in this series, you’ll definitely love this one. I’m so glad that I read it and I can’t wait to read the next in the series.NOTE: There is a bonus story that is also included in this work. It is a deviation from the current work I’ve read from the author but is no less compelling. The writing in this short story is adept and subtly heart breaking. Through the utilization of physical surroundings and short interactions the tale ushers a lady named Megumi along a snowy night. You get to experience her during a romantic holiday alone, wandering about outside. Her issues are palpable and I actually felt sincerely sad for her. Given that the story ends on an enigmatic note, I’m really hoping that Mr. Green writes an addition that can further my understanding of this wonderful creature. I really want to know what happens to her next.

By Nola Sarina I dove into American Monk knowing a bit about what I was getting into, thanks to the chapter samples the author posts on his Facebook page.What I didn't realize was how deeply this book was going to pull me in and keep me there in the enchanting, deeply moving world of the Benedictine Monks of St. Joseph's Abbey in colorful New Orleans.The author tells of his life as a Benedictine Monk, and begs readers to look at their own perceptions of the world around them and ask themselves if there are ways they could love each other better. Through work and prayer, Becket and the other monks of St. Joseph's Abbey navigate the emotional waters of the path to Eternal Love.What entrenched me in this story on such a soul-deep level was the universal goal of all the monks. American Monk does not simply speak on a Christian level. It speaks of love and strife on a human level, the way the monks work with each other to resolve conflicts, to cherish small blessings, to endure exhaustion, to deepen their own personal relationships with Eternal Love in so many ways. Every description of Gregorian chant flows effortlessly from the text to the reader's mind. Every monk in the story springs to life with their unique personalities and quirks. By Paranormal Fan I bought American Monk by Becket not truly knowing what I'd find inside or if it would be relevant to me and my current life. How wrong I was.American Monk is relevant to everyone if they simply pick a copy of the book up and peruse it in their own free time.All my life I have traveled along feeling seperated from society, different, trying forever to find myself, answers, usually unheard. With Becket's tender reflections I have been forced to study myself,to reach deep within and to listen, to me, for once not to everyone outside, to say an epiphany occured is putting it mildly. Becket has helped me focus on me and my relationship with me, my journal is now reflective and the questions I could never get answers for have been finally answered. Even if you don't lead a religious life style, even if you refuse Gods knock on your door, this book will open many doors for you, many beautiful thoughtful heart breaking moments that make you realize how wonderful life truly is, how blessed you are, if you simply open up to the idea of it all. Namaste my friends.

About the Author

Dr. Johannes F. Coy, Sc.D. is a biologist and cancer researcher who discovered the TKTL1 metabolism route. While working at the renowned German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg he made that discovery. He then founded a pharmaceutical company and two diagnostic companies to utilize his knowledge about the TKTL1 gene and begin development of new cancer therapies and tests.

Maren Franz has a degree in pharmaceutical studies and journalism. She is an author and cancer survivor.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Spot on, except for the recommendations on fructose By Kat Durham I have read for ages that sugar promotes cancer. This book is by far the most in-depth discussion I’ve seen as to why that may be true - specifically regarding glucose, which is only half of most sugars but all of more basic common starches we consume.Coy discusses his research on the TKTL1 gene mutation. His theory is that cancer can quickly take off when fermentation is available to it. Take away the glucose source, fermentation won't happen. Interestingly, he says this is why you'll never know someone with heart cancer (have to agree with him there!) because the heart can't use anaerobic fermentation as its energy source. I had thought conditions (like certain dietary nutrients) that inhibited angiogensis were a major factor in inhibiting tumor development, but the ability to thrive in hypoxic conditions means cancer has a workaround.Unfortunately Coy is so focused on the dangers of too much glucose that he actually recommends fructose as an alternative sweetener. Scary! I hope no one takes that recommendation seriously. It’s the main reason I can’t give the book 5 stars.Coy promotes a diet low enough in carbs (by which he means glucose) to promote ketosis. More important if you have been diagnosed with cancer and/or are hoping to stay in remission, than for those of us who have avoided cancer so far. His rule is no more than 60 grams per day, spread out over the course of the day with no more than 10 grams at a time. He says it’s probably ok to cheat occasionally. I don’t know if his suggestions really achieve or maintain ketosis, but he says urine ketosis strips should help you determine that. But even if you don’t get to ketosis, we should keep total glucose in check where we can.I have not yet tried any of the recipes, but there were a surprising number that were welcomingly unusual without being especially unusual ingredients, or reasonable substitutes for making something like bread when nothing but bread for the occasion will do. For instance, he explains the differences in available flours and which are the healthier options.I applaud Coy on his succinct dietary recommendations unrelated to glucose, to ensure a variety of healthy phytochemicals in your diet. They’re consistent with the excellent books by David Servan-Schreiber (Anticancer: a new way of life) and Richard Beliveau (Foods to fight cancer), which I highly recommend as further reading.I also appreciated the summary of alternative approaches that might be worth pursuing in addition to conventional treatment. Some of those approaches would be dismissed, out of ignorance and hubris, in the US. It was refreshing to read it from the more open and experienced European perspective.

An Invaluable Resource in the Fight Against Cancer By Dee Long You don't have to be facing a diagnosis of cancer in order to benefit from this amazing resource book, three-fourths of which is scientific, medical and nutritional information and one-fourth of which is a 150-recipe cookbook. The reader will learn all they need to know about how food choices affect the health and growth of cells in the body and the best menu choices to make when undergoing cancer treatment. Unlike most other cookbooks, the recipes here are geared to serve one rather than a group. We especially like the "did you know" factoids that are included on most pages. The Cancer Fighting Diet provides invaluable information to anyone determined to overcome cancer, in addition to being a great resource for anyone who wants their daily dietary choices to help them prevent disease.

Good choice of advanced topics, but too superficial By Jascha Casadio Despite being such a popular and mature configuration management system, the material covering Puppet is still very limited. Even more, titles covering advanced topics, or version 4 of the language, are as rare as unicorn sighting. Learning Puppet Security belongs to this category and is one of those titles we all Puppetters are eager to get our hands on. It targets intermetidate users who know the basics and are interested in securing the castle.Released early 2015, it covers version 3.x of the language—despite a stable 4 was already released—and spans through some 200 pages. As stated, the book is for intermediate users, which means nothing is said about installing and configuring Puppet.The first thing that comes to the mind reading this book is the interesting choice of topics the author has picked. None of them is usually found in any other Puppet title—apart the certification validation—and all of them play an important role in the toolset of any good DevOps or Systems Engineer. Among them, auditing, logging and network security. Validating certificates, as stated, is a typical topic of the very first chapters of any book of Puppet. Nothing new or different here: The discussion is smooth and well laid out, but is limited to the master-agents scenario. It would have certainly been interesting to have some kind of validation covering the masterlless scenario, which is widely used.Talking about auditing, the author starts with the a discussion about how important it is and why, followed by different options to achieve it and, finally, some code. While enjoyable to read, the topic is covered too superficially. The examples should be more real world and complex. And this is a recurring scenario throughout the whole book: many different interesting concepts are taken into the discussion yes, but while something is said, the reader will often find himself with many doubts and open questions.Overall is an interesting book that covers a very specific advanced topic of Puppet. Given its nature and the levels required to the reader, i would have expected something more complex, complete. The reader gets an idea of what topics to investigate next, but is not given much. For example, the chapters covering the ELK stack, provided that the user know how to set it up correctly, come with very basic hello world like examples, not a complete master/agents example that shows data being gathered and analyzed.I am not fully satisfied with this title and, as such, I don’t feel like recommending it.As usual, you can find more reviews on my personal blog: books.lostinmalloc.com. 14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Wacky, Funny and Horrific...Oddball Entertainment! By L. Jenkins I enjoyed this compilation. The two collaborating authors Joe Konrath and Jeff Strand are wonderful storytellers. Some of the humor is politically incorrect so if you are easily offended this book will probably not be right for you. The authors alternate stories except for the final novella. In Suckers they alternate chapters (sort of).I liked each story but I must admit that the Harry McGlade character is my favorite. McGlade is an obnoxious supporting character in Konrath's Jack Daniel's series who gives Jack constant grief but who also routinely comes through for her when the chips are down. The Jack Daniel's series begins with:Whiskey Sour (A Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels Mystery). I recommend reading the Jack Daniel's books in order though each book can stand alone on its own well enough.I was first introduced to Andrew Mayhem a few years ago when I read Graverobbers Wanted (No Experience Necessary) and Casket For Sale (Only Used Once), An Andrew Mayhem Thrillerby Jeff Strand. These books are available now in Kindle format, also. It just doesn't get any better than that.The partnership of Harry McGlade and Andrew Mayhem in Suckers worked really well for me - sometimes laugh out loud funny. This is relaxing, no-brain entertainment at it's best.

If it turns out they are even funnier than me then I will drink them under the table to show them what's what. Oh, yeah--the book. Necro is the wonderfully awful. It made my husband sound polically correct and I didn't think that was possible. Darn, I'g going to have to get the Jack Daniels books too. Found this one by reading "The List". A little less sick for those faint-of- heart but the dialogue doesn't get better than this.
