4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Speaking Well By Michael Taylor "Speaking Well" by Adam Hamilton is an excellent title for anyone wanting to improve their speaking skills. Having done presentations as a salesperson, Bible study teacher, community college adjunct faculty, Air Force Officer, etc., this title was of natural interest to me. As the author (a pastor) mentioned towards the end of the book, his aim is to provide insights on how to give a better presentation. While "Speaking Well" is a brief read (around 85 pages), there is plenty of helpful suggestions and thoughts, including:1. 3 questions to ask (why, who, what) when preparing a presentation.2. Talking about yourself too much is a turnoff (Amen!).3. Having a clear goal for your talk is critical.4. Effective leaders don't take themselves too seriously and let others laugh at them.5. Learn of the art of asking good questions.6. Suggestions for using visual aids (presentation slides, video clips, photos, and graphics) in your presentation.7. Paying attention to the "little" things (microphone, clothing, lighting, etc.) makes a difference.8. Advantages of using a manuscript for your presentation.9. Importance of body language and tone of voice.10. Suggestions for speaking on controversial topics.Some of the topics and others in the book may be either new information or reminders of something you have heard in the past. Either way, the book is full of helpful information. Whether you're a pastor, teacher, salesperson, or any job/community involvement/etc. requiring presentations, "Speaking Well" is a great title that I will often use for present and future reference.Recommended.

Small Pocket Guide Gives Big Tips To Speaking Well By Tante Maren I have taught Craft Classes, as well as done Doll Collecting Programs for local doll clubs over the years, and I wish I had this book back then. There are so many things you need to know to make a Program or Class more interesting and better flowing for your audience. Adam Hamilton is a Preacher and has made a great small pocket guide full of great tips to becoming more polished when confronted with an audience.He covers all the greatest points of public speaking- being very organized is important- just as his book is very well organized. He tells you that saying less me and more we makes the audience think they are more involved in your speech. It's best to begin with a point and end with the solution. Stories are great to emphasize your point and humor is always welcome from the audience. He tells us that audience participation keeps the audience's attention and that a visual reminder is great to have- like a small card with a statement on it for each audience member.The author tells why slides are not near as effective as pictures and that getting the littlest details right in preparation- technical things like lights and the microphone- can avoid small catastrophes. Manuscripts are great so you don't go way off track, as long as you know most of it, so you can keep that all important eye contact. He covers tone of voice and body language and when addressing a hot topic, why it's so important to give both side's view points, then your own viewpoint last.Also addressed is having healthy habits- like a good nights sleep before your speech. Adam Hamilton being a preacher, ends his book telling us to practice what we preach and not be hypocrites- but even for non preachers- it's good advice. For being an 86 page book, all the basics of speaking well are covered, so all you have to do is practice all his great tips in this 4 1/2 STAR pocket guide.

In this description, I think this collection of "essential skills for speakers, leaders, and preachers" hits its mark.Weighing it at just under one-hundred pages, Adam Hamilton brings together a total of nineteen tips that can be used to enhance any speaker's ability to connect with his or her audience. I enjoyed this little collection for the most part and I think I may have picked up a helpful tip or two, but there wasn't a whole lot of "new" here. This detail alone wasn't enough to tarnish my experience or affect my overall review as I think the book should be evaluated on the basis of what it professes to be, "A Pocket Guide of Essential Skills..."As a pocket guide of essential skills, I think Hamilton's book hits every mark. He doesn't make claims that the guide should be the definitive rule for all speakers and he doesn't promise new or profound insights. He does offer "essential skills" and this means fundamentals. He has delivered fundamentals and in a nice package.The book is small, as I've mentioned with each chapter around three to four pages, and each page is roughly five inches by seven inches...a small book. Hamilton is an engaging writer. He offers personal anecdotes, which draws in the attention of the reader. Also, the style of the writing and format of the book lends itself to a very casual style of reading. It isn't necessary the book be read in a linear fashion. The reader can thumb through pick chapters to peruse for inspiration. Overall, I like the book and think there will be several things I might consider with my next speaking engagements. I think, generally speaking, this Speaking Well guide offers a host of generally, good speaking tips.
